THESE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TWITTER THREADS 2

I did the first one, and you guys seem to enjoy so here I am again. Now that, President Buhari has banned Twitter, Twitter threads are on my blog. Let us begin:

MORAL PANICS

I have been reading a lot about past and present moral panics. From the red scare, McCarthyism, the satanic panic, the crack baby panic, etc to the modern-day “anti-CRT” moral panic. Now, I am curious to see someone do a deep dive into moral panics in Nigeria.

Especially in religious spaces, I think Nigerian religious spaces have a lot of content in terms of moral panics. From the time people were going to hell and seeing children there because of Ben 10 to the end of the gay agenda that led to anti-LGBTQ+ laws. I do believe, this is a gold mine of content people need to explore.

THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS AND HOW WE TREAT THE “BAD GUY”

This isn’t me absolving the “bad guys”. It’s more of a reflection of how we treat the bad guy.t

We have this “obliterate the enemy approach” when referring to who we term as the bad guy. From a societal standpoint eg how the US did a lot of ridiculous things in the name of fighting communists to individual ways, we refer to criminals (no matter the crime).

The truth is that a lot of “bad guys” are just complex humans living complicated lives. Instead of trying to destroy enemies, we should try and understand them. So we can reduce the creation of bad guys. Honestly from my reading, the end doesn’t always justify the means here.

MOVIES AND CULTURE

I have been thinking about how art but especially movies are a reflection of a society’s culture. Been listening to “You are Good” where hosts Sarah and Alex break down movies through the lens of culture. They discuss personal relationships, themes, acting, etc. Now, I want to see, a Nigerian version of this. I want to see someone break down old Nollywood/Nigerian movies through the lens of culture. From the outfits to the acting to the theme. I would love to see that, I think that would give insights into what our society was thinking at the time the movie was made.

What have you been thinking about lately?
